what's wrong with my dash and console lights? - EuroBenz - 06-11-2011

I recently bought another W123 wagon (1980) because I just love them. This one has no interior lights except for shifter and the regular dome light. Radio is dead too. Lighter works. I checked and see no dimming option anywhere in the dash, so my guess is there's no rheostat? What can cause this and where is it located? I doubt every single bulb is out, but its a possibility.
Thank you guys.

Just about all of the lights around the console are sent via fiber optic cables that begin at the back of the cluster and are snaked to each switch.
If the rheostat is kaput, it could be the source of all the failed lights. You can bypass the rheostat safely by soldering a wire across its leads.

You will lose the dim function, but will have your lights back.

Radio is dead? Radio lights or the radio it self. There is a rheostat on one of the two knobs in the cluster. Cant remember which. Everyone just removes the stat and jumpers it. Dont think ANYONE has EVER complained about it being to bright in a W123 heh.e suggested but none result in the motor shutting off with the key.

Yes. Radio dead. You mean the ones that sets the clock and the other one that resets the trip odometer? I don't have a dimmer for the dashlights. It's the basic 1980 model I think.
