Curiosity Got Me In Trouble (Vacuum Internal Question) - SixSpeed - 05-29-2011

Hey Guys,

Slow...progress continues on my Unimog. I am deleting the vacuum pump, and I got a little curious and started taking things apart. I wasn't expecting all the do-dads inside here. I am guessing this is some sort of vibration damper for the vacuum pump. Is that correct? There were two springs, two rods, and two...rollers? Very interesting setup for sure.

Can I leave this stuff out or does this serve another function? Anyone have a diagram? I am assuming the bolt in the middle secures the gear?

Thanks in advance!

Looks like the timing device. Forgot what it does, it advances the injection timing at high rpm or something.

Oh super, I'm an idiot. Didn't occur anywhere in my tinnnnyy little brain that the IP is driven off the same gear.
Did some research, found I have another month left on my EPC subscription. They call it an "Injection Timing Device". If its function is to advance pump timing depending on RPM, that is pretty neat.

Now question #2, how do I put all this junk back together? FML

I THINK I have an OM617 manual around here, but not certain. Any further comments/help = much appreciated!

Haha, that last post made me laugh twice.

Hope you get it figured out. I haven't taken one apart yet....
