OM648 Engine Info Wanted - gen3performance - 05-13-2011

Hey everyone, I am almost through parting out my e300td and will be buying another car very soon. I am heavily considering buying an 05-06 E320 CDI and cannot find very much info on the engine.

I was mainly wondering what this engine uses for a common-rail pump, but I would like to know as much about engine as possible. Any info that can be given will would be great!

Also how much power could this engine produce if the injection was maxed out.

Thanks in advance!

I don't know about that engine but I read on mb world about a guy who had like 300 or 400 hp from a 4 cyl cdi

Holy smokes! That's impressive!

RE: OM648 Engine Info Wanted - DeliveryValve - 05-14-2011

Hopefully MB Tech would chime in. He works on these cars for a living.

Personally, I love the om648. Great power and nice and smooth.
Can't really tell you specifics of the motor, but certainly there are a lot of tunes out there for it.

Here are some companies.

Rocket Chip
O.CT Tuning
Malone Tuning
InMotion Tuning

Is that the v6 or inline 6 cdi engine? Over here in good old blighty we got the inline 6 cdi from about 2000-2005 I think it was.

The inline 6 cdi is a good engine, 200 ish hp as standard and I think better than the bmw 3L unit... I hear the newer bmw unit is good though, my friend in town just got a 2005 535d with the twin turbo lump. Just got it back from the remappers too Smile And I haven't been out in it yet Sad

Get in touch with this gent in Finland.
http://www.superturbodiesel.com/std/user-tuikku

He has done quite a bit of tuning with the CDI engines...up to and including fitting larger nozzles and even custom fitting a larger high-pressure fuel pump.

I want to say he fitted the Bosch CP3 - which is found on the 6.6L Duramax and 5.9L/6.7L Cummins here on our side of the pond.

Due to our expertise this side of the pond with the Duramax/Cummins engines, there also exists the possibility of belt (serpentine accessory drive) driving a second high pressure fuel pump instead of chain or gear drive...that's how those with twin CP3's on the Duramax/Cummins get 'er done.

In my humble opinion, a single CP3 in good health should flow more than enough fuel for even a very heavily fueled OM648. Twin CP3's aren't completely needed unless you want 700+ HP. Just monitor rail pressure and make sure it isnt' dropping at high load and high RPM.

Matt

I was hoping it had a CP3 from the factory but I'm guessing its not. I kinda have a dilema now with what I should buy. Can't really decide between a CDI and a Pontiac G8 GT. Love the diesels, but G8's get outta their own way.

The aftermarket performance potential of the LSX V8's is second to none - so you really can't go wrong there. That chassis is proven too - but you'll have to deal with Pontiac's infamous build quality - or lack thereof. There will be lots of plastic and cheap materials in the interior...all arranged to look like a German car...but often falls short.

I really like my W210.025, but the exterior corrosion is really bugging me in a big way. Makes me wonder if the W211 chassis also suffers from the corrosion issues...? At least by buying an American car, you know you'll be able to solve nearly any issue with it quickly and for less $ merely by shopping at your local junkyard.

Did you sell all your W210 parts yet?

Beers,

Matt

Yes, as the W211 gets older now, they show up with the same issues like W210.

I am really curious about it, that MB has not learned from their catastrophic sheet metal issues from W210 and continued making the, same mistakes with the W211....

Sorry for the late response, the OM648 uses a high pressure pump instead of a conventional injection pump. this pump is still driven from the timing chain. I have never seen their full potential but have personally installed and driven one with the KLEEMANN KD BOX which tricks the CDI module on how much rail pressure it is reading, thus giving you more fuel than what it is asking for. This Mod turns it into quite the tire burner.

RE: OM648 Engine Info Wanted - gen3performance - 05-22-2011

I know what you're saying about the some of the quality issues with the Pontiacs, but just the nature of the beast I guess. Also I'm no stranger to the LSx stuff and would love a gross 4 door rocket like the g8....but I guess only time will tell what my next ride is going to be....

The rust and corrosion on my W210 was betting pretty ridiculous which another reason that leads me to stay away from a higher mileage benz from the midwest area. It would be a big disappointment to see these W211's rotting away in a couple years.

MB Tech: Is the common rail pump a bosch? Possibly similar to the CP3?

As far as my W210 parts, I have sold pretty much everything except the shortblock, trans, and a few other various parts.
