Trans identity and help please - beltsander2110 - 04-10-2011

Hi everyone.
Im a new member and i have tried to find answers but i just cant. ok. so i started off buying a om615 that had a four speed attached. i built a divorced np231 and put it in a jeep! turns out the little naturally asperated mill wasnt quite enough for me but i was so super impressed by these motors that i searched out a om617 and put that in front of the existing drivetrain. I love it. Im proud of it and hand out pictures of the t case that is impossible to divorce all the time! anyhow. i recently hurt my trans. i think i chipped a gear in reverse. problem is i dont know what the trans is. now i found on this fourm pictures of merc trans. i am pretty sure it is the early cast iron flat back from a 220 or 240d. as forced picture shows in one of these posts. so where do i find parts for it? and does this particular trans have a common name so i can order parts? thanks. also second question. in a normal 85 300d what is the rear end ratio and what does the actual stock tire physically measure? the reason i ask is becasue im running 35 inch tires with a 4.10 rear. i would like to gear this a little lower than its designed to run but i dont know where to start. and if anyone has any thoughts on the matter how strong are these cast iron transmissions? thanks a million in advance. I absolutely fell in love with these motors and cant wait to help anyone i can with what i learned and my previous knowledge

Can you post a picture of the transmission?

Regarding the '85 rear transmission ratio. It's a 2.88 and tires are 195 70 R14, which translates to 24.7 inch diameter.

hope that works. sorry its not super clear its the best picture i have without the body on. thanks for the rear end. doing the math that puts my 4.10s and 35s right where they should be

Only people with AOL accounts can see the picture in the link you provided.

Iron transmissions should have a metal data plaque mounted in the right side of the casing with a number like 711.xxx
It might also have a code to indicate gearing something like G1/xx

i dont know how to get a picture on this fourm. there is no tag on the trans. im at a total loss with getting parts for this maybe i could pm or email the picture to someone if they think they can help. thank you
well that picture looks like it showed up. its shrunk but should get the point across

RE: Trans identity and help please - DeliveryValve - 04-12-2011

I could only see a small portion of the transmission. But it looks like a w115 220D or 240D transmission. 716.002 (mb part number 1152604201) or 716.003 respectively.

I guess I'm gonna have to scrap this tranny and find one that I can get posters for. Thank you delivery nozzle. Calling it the 716.002 was the best answer I got. Still didnt help locate anything though. But thank you

Here's one on eBay...
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Mercedes-Benz-W115-220D-Manual-Transmission-Diesel-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem35b0bc3944QQitemZ230598392132QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories#ht_500wt_1182

If not that one, you can get a later w123 chassis 240D 716.005 transmission. It should work with little or no setup modifications.
