617 engine rebuild thread opinions - totaldisaster - 04-04-2011

I am putting together a rebuild thread for the 617 turbo. It will be geared towards the backyard type and incorporate simple measurements / inspection of critical items without rare or expensive tools.

Since 'doing it by the book' is outlined in the FSM, this will be more like doing the best you can with what you have.

Feel free to opine so I don't forget anything.

make a list of all the thread specs for each thing. it would be super convenient to have a BOM for replacing all the normal metric bolts / nuts / washers so that you could just go to lowes and get a basket full of all replacement grade 8 hardware without needing to bring all the old ones in for comparison.

Sounds like a good plan, just be carefull to specify that there are possible problems when it's not done by the book. Wink

Ewwww! Non-OEM /OEM equivalent bolts on this thing makes me cringe... I just have this thing about seeing hex heads where there were socket head cap screws before...

Purely aesthetic reasons on my part, I just can't stand the difference.Angry
