1969 220D (added Turbo) vacuum governor problem - Larkston - 03-15-2011

So, I decided my car was underpowered and thought that adding a turbo would be a good idea. I added a T3 turbo, I think, from a 300D, not to sure of the exact year of the turbo. I did all the mods I thought it needed and have discovered a very big problem. When the engine gets to somewhere around 3000 rpms, 220Ds don't have tachometers, the turbo boost causes there to be no back pressure, so the car continues to accelerate when I let off the pedal, and I have to kill the engine to stop it from running away. I've tried a couple of ideas to get the vacuum governor to work right at high rpms, but nothing seems to work. Oh, and it works properly at low rpms, its just when the boost really gets going that it won't stop accelerating. So, anyone have thoughts on how to remedy the problem?

Boost controller set at low boost

Now that's an interesting problem... Smile Does this engine have a throttle plate? Is the turbo before or after the plate in the intake system? If it's after, do you think that sampling vacuum between the plate and the turbo is possible?

If the plate is after the turbo, I don't think you have a chance.

The plate is after the turbo...I've tried a couple of odd fixes, but even when I let off the gas and the plate closes, the boost at the higher rpms is preventing vacuum from being created. The thing is though, that I have heard of other people turbocharging 220Ds without a problem like mine.

Put the throttle at the turbo inlet.

Hmmm, that sounds like it should work. Great idea, thanks.

^ ditto

I have the rajay it on my 1980 240d and had to gut the throttle body's to make it work with the newer style injection pump!
