Was one year better than the others? - bdiesel - 03-13-2011

I've been keeping an eye out and I'm ready to get back into a 300D. There's an 83 for sale somewhat locally, and it got me thinking about the differences. Looking back, I think I enjoyed my 85 most but that is purely subjective. Were there actual differences which would make one better than another?

85 had a taller final drive and a higher torque converter stall speed. Makes a difference in the feel of it.

83 is the "best". Its got all the chassis updates and bug fixes of 82 without the emissions that choked 84 and 85.

What do the updates consist of?

A turbo for one, if he meant 82 vs 81. For 83 vs 82 though, I remember carpeting and seatbelt changes.

Nope. Turbo is the same from 1978-1985.

The updates were to the chassis frame design (Stiffer, eliminating the need for the beefy radiator crossmember), instrument cluster added the low fuel light check, belt buckle head design, and a few other things I'm forgetting.

Source?

I really like my 87.

Open the hood on an early 82 and one made after August.

Never noticed that. Maybe that explains the discontinued use of glued on fenders about that time also. It doesn't need it because the body is stiffer.

You are talking about the diagonal bracket? I was very much under the impression that this was AC vs non AC.

Yes. The one between the bumper and radiator.

RE: Was one year better than the others? - winmutt - 03-18-2011

My server is down at home but I am very certain that this was due to the AC system that the additional brace was required for the condensor. Getting OT. I will do some research and PM you.

No. Every 300D had AC.
