Sub forums - winmutt - 03-10-2011

So I think its high time to split up the engine forum into sub forums for some better organization. I considered this a long time ago and at the time there was just not threads to justify it. Now there is close to 696. Also I was worried about SEO getting screwed up but now that the SEO plugin I use is not supported anymore and I have to upgrade it, seems like a good time for reorg.

I am thinking of splitting it into
Engine
--Mechanical
--Fuel
--Air

Thoughts?

Sounds good to me. Would the stickies stay like they are now?

RE: Sub forums - winmutt - 03-10-2011

They would be moved to the appropriate subforum.

RE: Sub forums - Captain America - 03-10-2011

Why not just put everything under "Diesel Discussion"??? SO ORGANIZED! LMAO!

Seriously though that is a great idea.

Can we also sub-divide by engine?

I thought about this as well. om61x om60x.

om35x? We dont have alot of moggers here but they come by from time to time.

What's Mechanical?

RE: Sub forums - 300D50 - 03-10-2011

Can you do a mod-rewrite rule for all the moved topics, so that the old links that I and others have on other sites still work?

RE: Sub forums - Captain America - 03-10-2011

Looking good.....

RE: Sub forums - DeliveryValve - 03-10-2011

I don't get it?

You have Mechanical, Fuel, Air, OM60X, OM61X

But shouldn't Mechanical, Fuel, and Air be a subforum of OM60X and OM61X engine families?

.

Good one. I have re-enabled all the old rewrites and looks like they still work fine.

Well that is a good question. The thing is, turbos are air, regardless of what engine. Injection pumps, the 617 had both, and most things apply to each. Mechanical is a general one for other engines. I was thinking also about adding Swaps for the oddball diesels into s10's etc.

Your thoughts?

Eventually the "Engine" forums will become just a category I think.

RE: Sub forums - winmutt - 03-10-2011

PS you will notice that the page links in threads work properly now.

Garbage - ForcedInduction - 03-11-2011

Too much clutter and it screws up links. Change it back.
There was nothing wrong with the old format and this didn't improve the forum's usability at all. Now people have to wade through several "sub" forums instead of just a one-stop shop.

RE: Sub forums - winmutt - 03-11-2011

Links should not be screwed up, the old rewrite rules are still in effect. Once I finish cleaning engine up it will be a category. I am certainly open to changing the sub categories if you have a better suggestion. It is fairly easy to manage in the database.

Ya I dunno that I like the new setup at all.

The idea was to make it easy to find engine, air or ip specific threads. I'm thinking about returning it the way it was and then having sticky threads that list specific types of threads.

RE: Sub forums - 300D50 - 03-11-2011

sticky threads = much easier.

Ya thats what I'm thinking as well. I can write a cron job to auto add threads to the stickies based on subject key words once they hit a certain number of replies....

Bingo. One-stop shopping links to the most useful threads.
Please don't do "auto add". If people want to wade through pages of unorganized threads based on key words, they can use the search function. Stickies need to be reserved for important information.

Seconded.
