Engine pictures, a front exterior shot, a few interior shots. Always covered at night/when not in use.

I purchased this car unseen over eBay.The seller forgot to mention that 40 years ago, the vehicle barely a week out of the showroom was stolen from the first owner, a doctor in San Francisco. It has Replacement Identification Numbers from the State of California. It was purchased by the California Police Department and used by them for almost 40 years, before finding a middleman and then me. A bit of a hassle to register in Kentucky, but that's another story (and ongoing).

97,000 miles when I purchased the car (104,000 now)
Silver and black leather look great for a 40 year old car
NO rust, at all.
New fluids, belts, air filter.
Could use new Bilsteins in a year or two.
Super smooth power delivery and ride.
I need to clean the window regulators and sunroof motor, as well as tint the windows and replace all the doors + windshield seals.
Other than that, a great, solid Mercedes.
The mechanics at the local Tafel dealership love this car = the kind of cars cast from steel.
Background: I sold a 2006 Subaru STi with suspension & some performance mods = my 4 y.o. likes riding faster in the old car, but loves the Chitty Chitty Growl Growl of this car.

I'd love to figure in a replacement turbo in the future (Holset, other), a straight 3"/3.5" exhaust, a Myna/Black Smoke Racing Injection Pump, massive US bumpers delete, speed-friendlier tires/wheels, may be an air suspension setup. Interior-wise, the only things i'd ever consider doing is add sound dampening, add nicer carpeting and redo the door cards in black ostrich leather.

Is black smoke racing tuning IPs??

RE: Silver Bullet - 1979 Turbo Diesel - 300SD_KY - 03-02-2011

Yes.

Teemu Peltola can be reached at: blacksmokeracing@gmail.com

Based in Finland (Europe), he builds & races diesel drift Mercedes.

Teemu's English is great and the price is right.

RE: Silver Bullet - 1979 Turbo Diesel - Captain America - 03-02-2011

What kind of price?

I have seen him say that they can do it but what can they do?

RE: Silver Bullet - 1979 Turbo Diesel - 300SD_KY - 03-02-2011

This from an older email from Teemu: "if you take pictures from your dieselpump and send to me, I will check if the pump is "normal", then we can fix it with 850€ +shipping."

Always bad to assume, but given the overbuild on Teemu's car, I'd assume he'd build you a race-proven application.

Nice w116 SD! Mine has a build date of 12/79. I wish it was that clean but I'm working on it.

Does everything work?

RE: Silver Bullet - 1979 Turbo Diesel - 300SD_KY - 03-09-2011

Hey Jesse,

Knocking on wood ... Everything except the right rear window, cruise control work ... will sort those out.

The overbuilt quality of a well maintained W116 is astounding ...

TTAC manages a good graph about the quality of vintage MBs

RE: Silver Bullet - 1979 Turbo Diesel - dieselboy - 03-09-2011

Uh? My car was exactly the same way!! My right rear window doesnt work either!
My a/c did work till last week. But I'll fix that soon.

RE: Silver Bullet - 1979 Turbo Diesel - Captain America - 03-09-2011

Twisting the fuses and cleaning the switches got mine from only one window going down to all four working great

40 years? I am older then the car, but I don't think I've hit Forty yet. Big Grin

Nice looking car and interesting history. It's a keeper!

I wonder what the cops used it for. That would be interesting to research. maybe it was a stakeout car occasionally

RE: Silver Bullet - 1979 Turbo Diesel - 300SD_KY - 03-09-2011

I talked to the retired detective ... he wouldn't go into details.

I'll go out on a limb and venture to say that a "business vehicle" that could run on a cop's budget would be a great proposition, especially in "let's move slowly and not scare anybody away" situations.

A total sleeper cop car.

Wonder what the modern equivalent sleeper diesel cop car would be.
