617 main seal - Motorhead - 02-08-2011

I have the stock rope seal for my 617 and don't have a problem with it but is there any improvements like a lip seal upgrade out there?

The rope seal is the only rear seal out there and they have long service life. Only draw back it is you need to pull the upper pan and lift the crank out to install the seal.

It would be cool if you can machine the block and upper pan to accept a lip seal so you can replace it without removing the upper pan.

I have completed enough projects to start on the 300CD so the engine and trans will be pulled to fix leaks and rebuild the trans, I will have to look at the seal when I pull it apart and see if I can come up with somthing better but I have put allot of ropes in old fork trucks that have worked fine.

Imho, it isn't worth the effort to try a conversion on the rear seal, mine looked to be OEM from 78 and still didn't leak.

I agree, I was just looking for some engineering upgrades that would take minimal head scratch'n. I have had this car for a few years and have just put some time aside to start the build, I build allot of gas engines but this is my first diesel so if I sound lost I am.

I was going to say, that this particular seal is probably one of the best... many motors with a lot of miles aren't leaking. Trouble comes when you need to finally replace the seal.

Which is why the 60x is a better engine IMO.
