240D manual trans, is the bell housing removable? - Gross Polluter - 01-09-2009

For my Volvo project I'll be mating a World Class T5 to my OM617. Now, I'd like to use the 240D MT flywheel which would provide an easy solution for the starter and flywheel. I've been trying to figure out how I'd like to mate the trans to the engine. Going through some threads on another forum, I came across this post:

Looking at the picture, it appears the trans on the right has a detachable bell housing whereas the one on the left is cast into the case. My question is, am I correct in assuming the bell housing detaches from the trans on the right? If it does, is there a specific year or series 240D that particular trans came in?

I'm thinking if that bell housing can detach from the trans then making an adapter plate to bolt the T5 to the 240D bell housing would make short order of mating the trans to the engine.

The old iron body MB-made transmissions have a separate bell. The Getrag models are unibody.

There are two styles that will bolt up to the engine. The humpback body (left, late W123) and square body (right, W115 and early W123).

The one on the right is a rebuilt one I got for $300 + my old tranny. Big Grin

I have only ever seen the "humpback" version except for 5 speeds and all those are the square ones.

Thanks. That helps next time I'm in the yard. The square body looks like the ideal candidate but I could make either work.
