How can I cheat and start the car? - EuroBenz - 12-31-2010

I know this mechanical stuff is lots of fun but I'm loosing it.
The car simply won't start anymore. I replaced alternator, battery, terminals, alternator and power steering belts, oil and filter, fuel filters, air filter, glow plugs fuse, took out all 5 glow plugs tested them and vacuumed each hole, I even added diesel from a gas can to the tank. The old oil was very very thick. I am getting fuel to the filters because i took the big one out and it's full. I also tried the starting fluid on the air filter but some say is not a good ideea. It's like there's no spark but the engine is turning. Could it be bad glow plugs? I connected each one to booster cables and they turned red.
What would you do next?

prime the fuel system with the primer pump on the injection pump like a 100 times!

Then crank and crank and crank and then crank some more and give it a little throttle at first but (don't) give it any more throttle when it feels likes its starting to catch! until it is actually firing on all cylinders then rev it up!

don't stop cranking until it starts it may take awhile!

Also, maybe add a running vehicle attached by jumper cables if you're going to be cranking so much.

This sounds good but I don't know what the primer pump looks like. I know where the IP is. How do I prime?
Also, when I put ignition on and wait for the glow plugs, the battery voltage drops from like 12.6 to 11.7,11.9. Normal?

the pump is on the IP. Mine is black but I think some are red too. you just push it in.
here is a pic though it's kinda bad to see the pump

it should be just to the right of that inline filter

I think "drdan" is using one in one of these videos

There are a few different styles of primer pump all located in the same area!

If it's the knob style It's a big white knob on the LH side of the pump by the fuel lines it unscrews the knob and you pump it up and down and screw it back down when done!

If it's the black button style it located in the same spot and looks like the one in the video just push it down a few times!

as far as the voltage the glow plugs use a lot of power! sounds normal to me!

I did find the primer knob, thank you, it has a white cap. I also found out that I might have air in fuel lines so I'm trying to take it out by loosing the nuts at the injectors and cranking the engine. So far only two lines spit out diesel after 4-5 tries (battery keeps dying so its constantly on the charger). I have to be patient now. Can I use the prime pump to do this? Instaed of cranking engine?

I don't believe so. You have to crank the engine to get the air out of the fuel lines. Loosen all the line nuts at the injectors about a half turn. When a line starts getting fuel out, go ahead and tighten that nut up again. Like said above, use either a battery charger or another vehicle to help keep the battery up. May be a good idea to let the starter rest for a bit between cranking to keep from overheating it.

prime it with the pump it will get most of the air out that's what the lines between the injectors do!

I would pump the primer pump like 50 times it will get stiff when most of the air is out and will probably leak a little witch is normal it seals up when it's screwed closed!

Worst case, you can always tow it.

Tow start works nice! It's kinda scary, but it does the job just fine

RE: How can I cheat and start the car? - EuroBenz - 01-05-2011

[/size]SUCCESS! After charging battery again at the local parts store, I was finally able to get the air out of all 5 lines going to the injectors. Now all I have to deal with is the rough start, but I think a valves adjustement will take care of some of that. Also, instead of just cleaning the glow plugs I might just do the paralel pencil type conversion. Is engine flush ok for diesels?
Thank you all for the replies.
