auto to man trans in a 72 220D - benjamang - 11-27-2010

I have a 72 220D in excellent condition with an auto tranny. The auto is sluggish and boring to drive and i would like to put a manual in it. I was given a 1975 240D which is rusted beyond repair and has a cracked head but the 4 speed manual I am told still works fine. They are both w115 chassis so it should bolt right on. Has anyone tried this or is it a bad idea??

switching to manual is NEVER a bad idea! Big Grin

I also have a 74 with a manual tranny, but have not removed it, however, with two cars both in the same chassis style and the same and probably simpler and this is probably an easy swap.

Document it if you do, im going to be playing with mine at some point, and would love to see some pics! Smile

I can't see any problems at all with what you propose. It should be about as simple as they come considering you have a perfect donor car to use. The only thing I want to alert you to is to have your donor flywheel match balanced to the auto flywheel that's in the 220 before you transfer it.

Should be totally plug and play.

It will be a simple parts-swap job.
