OM617.931 cruise control ....possible?? - 300GD - 11-08-2010

Hi,
Did some searching and cant really find any info .
I have Mercedes 1987 300GD non turbo with OM617.931, manual 5 speed . Im looking for any istructions, possiblity of installing cruise control to this pedal line control acelerator diesel engine. How hard this would be? is it safe ? does it require tearing steering column apart ? what parts would i need ? appreciate any info .J

I been wondering about this myself. My car has cruise but the gasser's EEC controls the cruise. An engine vacuum signal type set up won't work.A turbo diesel doesn't produce vacuum at speed.

I seem to remember than audiovox made(makes?) a cruise unit that works with our cars...

You'll need the speedo pickup, the brain box, the actuator, and the stalk. After that it's just a matter of running the brake light wire, clutch wire, and etc.

Quite simple.

If you use the electric type actuator it should be a lot easier than the vac ones.

Those things are notorious for failing during operation.

Do you know where I can look at a wiring diagram of the cruise stalk?I want to be able to keep my cars steering wheel cruise controls.

Iirc it's 5 wires, one is common, the others are normaly open for accel decel off and resume.

Search and you should find it, it's a fairly common thing to resolder these contraptions.
If not, I'll ohm out my stalk.

Is the controller/brain box part of the cars electronics or is it a separate controller?I tried a quick search but I will be doing a more thorough search later.I think this is the last system that I need to map out before doing the Benz diesel conversion.Still looking for a complete car close by.Well, one that I can afford and don't feel guilty about robbing it of it's heart.

It's in the drivers side near right knee under the dash iirc, big ol 1X4X6-ish aluminum can on the 70's cars. If you google "300d cruise resolder remove" you should find the threads/articles.

Interesting swap candidates! Please consider cross-posting a bit on HotRodCoffeeShop, the guys would likely maul you for pics and a car/truck history. Smile

I have used those on older GMs and Fords that I had, and they fail often. Most of the people I know that installed them, or had them installed, had nothing but problems.Maybe better than they were a decade ago.I still wanna merge the Benz system with the controls that came in my car.The Benz cruise control stalk has the same functions as my steering wheel cruise controls.I think it comes down to matching the Benz cruise control unit's wires to my cars cruise controls.

the one thing I just realized, is that the benz system wants to see a VR sensor off the back of the speedo cable, not a square wave from a digital VSS/off the tail shaft. That might complicate things a tad.

Do you have a diagram for the current cruise system? I can ohm out my stalk tomorrow to get wire color/pinout, but I could swear the pinout was on Jim's page.

Might be easier to just keep the current system and adapt the actuator's cable to work with the Benz linkage.

That would be great except the cruise is controlled by the EEC and will be going away with the engine and transmission.I wunder if ther's away to fool the Benz system into thinking it's still attached to the VSS.My crappy Haynes manual, for my Cougar, doesn't show cruise control for any years. As soon as I find a Benz to rob the drive train from,I'll get a manual.Oh,I've also been reading up on what safety devices are need to kill the cruise control if the clutch or brake is pressed.I also found out that most factory units shut off if the engine speed exceeds 4000rpm.This would help if the car is knock,or jumps, out of gear.
