Hypermileage - ForcedInduction - 11-01-2010

I know 1 test does not an absolute fact make.... but...

I got an itch to see what my 300D could really do if driven as nicely as humanly possible. Answer, 40.69mpg.
The result was very pleasant but the drive was not. 215 miles of the I-70 eastward plains, 4 hours, 45mph max (except coasting down short hills), no more than 600*f pre-turbo (except 700*f once to get on the highway upramp), 2100rpm, no boost, no open windows, no A/C, tires 35psi. Fuel temperature at the refill was 5* over ambient at the metal supply line and the tank was filled to the brim start and finish.

And thats with the drawbacks of a 3.46 diff and automatic tranny too.

That means on the open highway you could pass 840miles per tank, if you have the stamina, bladder and right calf to last 18 hours. Big Grin

If you're skeptical and tack on a full gallon for fuel expansion and/or tank air void error it still works out to 34.2mpg.

My 240D isn't/wasn't very far behind with a tad more aggressive driving. I bet without the two passes over skyline drive it could have matched or passed what I got in the 300D today.

Thats right, fuel was up to $4.76/gallon back then...

In any case, I think I'm happy with the results. Big Grin

Very interesting...I do not have the stamina to drive at that speed! I would love to see results like this with the Floyd Element Tuned pump. On another note, I remember paying $4.96/gallon of diesel at one point here in Florida. It cost me $98.00 or so to fill my tank up if I recall correctly. RIDICULOUS!

Wow pretty impresive I must say. Even though it's a w201 with a na602. I was estimating close to 36 with aggresive driving and highway use. If I'm not mistaking.

RE: Hypermileage - ForcedInduction - 11-02-2010

I bet the W201 190D could break 55mpg under the same conditions with a 5-speed.

All of this is a bit ridiculous though, not quite "real world" driving.

Kind of like that 48mpg @ 43mph mustang. Pretty much any vehicle is going to be really efficient at such low speeds but its still interesting to see just how high it can go without cheating (like the "100mpg" Prius trick of driving around a parking lot in electric mode).

RE: Hypermileage - JB3 - 11-02-2010

lol, that must have been a hair raising drive at 45 on the interstate for all that time!

RE: Hypermileage - ForcedInduction - 11-02-2010

Yeah, pissed off a few semis but I got to get a few podcasts out of my library.

Speaking of, this is a great one somebody did about their 240D: http://adammccune.com/podcastgen/index.php?p=episode&name=2010-05-10_pod2.mp3

RE: Hypermileage - George3soccer - 11-03-2010

Very true. But I was revving the piss out of it. Just to make this car to high speed and this was with a 5 speed aswell.

RE: Hypermileage - totaldisaster - 11-03-2010

wow.

what is your pump setup, currently? (ie..mods + adjustments)

RE: Hypermileage - ForcedInduction - 11-03-2010

M-pump off a euro 300D, maxed out.

RE: Hypermileage - garage - 11-03-2010

Whats maxed out?

RE: Hypermileage - ForcedInduction - 11-04-2010

Fuel rack can move the full travel.

RE: Hypermileage - Jtn190D - 11-04-2010

Wow thats pretty cool. I've been getting between 33 and 35 MPG but if I drove like that I could probably get 45.

RE: Hypermileage - Riverstick - 12-08-2010

As I live in Europe I calculate my fuel consumption in Imperial gallons(4.544 litres) as opposed to US gallons(3.79 litres)
My old 116 300D 4 speed manual OM617 turbocharged averaged 30mpg and pulled like a train.
My old 123 300D 4 speed manual OM617 N/A used to average 30-35mpg even after 450,000 miles. Great car powerwise as well.
My old 124 300D 5 speed manual OM 603N/A consistently topped 50mpg from day one until I sold it with over 500,000 miles, and was a topper to go. It could outrun every diesel along the motorways until the CDI's came to town and made mince meat of most petrol cars that came within its sights as well. It could cruise all day happily at 100mph or run out to 125mph if you wished. It had a real rorty sound from it when accelerating and would tear into a steep hill with great gusto. The engine really came alive from 2,200 -4,000rpm. I often wondered about the injection pumps and its settings in that car.
My old 124 300D Automatic OM 603N/A could rarely better 30-35mpg and felt asmatic next to the manual version. A big disapointment. A rubber band would up had more acceleration.
My old 2004 E220CDI W211 OM611 turbocharged auto & remapped had no bother achieving 55mpg and was a flying machine to go.
My 2002 W220 S320CDI OM613A auto is pretty gutsy and does 35mpg
My wife's 2001 W210 E320CDI OM613A autoestate(wagon) 7 seeater averages 35mpg
My BMW 2005 525D(6 cylinder DI tubocharged/intercooled common rail) 6 speed manual can easily top 50mpg and performs like a racing car!

It would be awesome to see some pictures of your cars Riverstick!
