my road trip - larsalan - 10-31-2010

Well, we have been tooling around town for a while now but, just did 700 miles on the interstate with few issues. Just leaky tires and burning oil, probably about a quart. No odometer but, I used the mile markers to measure mpg over 123 mile stretch. Not too good 22.5mpg at 75mph. Guess I will try to keep it under 70.

Pretty exciting. Saw another 300d on the interstate. He was painted flat black.

Also saw a semi parked in my GF's neighborhood that had huge stacks. They must have been 10in diameter. I'll post the pic I took but, it won't do it justice.

Think I have pinpointed some suspension squeaking and the reason the passenger wheel occasionally looks like it has a 10 degree camber.
30 year old control arm bushings.
Looks like it's another $25 into this heap Smile

Ahhh thats fine, throw it back it lol

RE: my road trip - winmutt - 03-14-2011

Starting an aluminum can recycling program? There is a not so healthy tin can tick in there and sputtering? Reminds of the car from the original Flubber.

RE: my road trip - larsalan - 03-14-2011

@winmutt
maybe I will have to make a new video. That's when I first got it. I don't know how it could even run. Both the supply and return fuel lines were rusted, cracked and gushing fuel about 1-2 ft from the tank.
You can tell me if it sounds any better now. Wink

RE: my road trip - larsalan - 03-26-2011

Back on the topic of fuel lines. Now the tank screen is clogged. And I have a road trip planned for next weekend. Of course just as this debacle is beginning freezing rain starts to fall. My junkyard solution is a quart container in the engine bay as a temp fuel tank. This works poorly because the supply line is probably only 3/4 the way down. So I can make it about 1.5 miles before having to fill up.
Anyway, this car dies in the wendy's drive thru and the manager gives me my order free and just wants me to get out of the damn way during lunch hour. Thank goodness for small victories.

ordered tools to remove the screen, will have to upgrade to a 1 gal temp tank and better supply line.

RE: my road trip - Captain America - 03-26-2011

Just swap the return and supply lines from the tank for now.

RE: my road trip - larsalan - 03-26-2011

I had tried that first and it worked. Then started dying etc. Switched back and forth between supply and return kept dying.
So this temporary tank is working and I went under the tank to drain some fuel once the rain stopped. And it poured out quite freely from both supply and return lines. So I am not sure what is causing the issue in the normal fuel circuit/loop.
The vent has a rubber line that seemed crimped but I doubt that is the trouble. I have ordered a 1 13/16 socket to pull the strainer so I will have a look at that in a few days.

RE: my road trip - larsalan - 03-31-2011

Took the tank screen out today, it was perfectly clean. I did flip flop the supply/return a few times in the last couple of days. Caught a load of dead leaves in the prefilter.
Also, replaced that janky set of bushings the other day.

RE: my road trip - Captain America - 03-31-2011

I have always wondered how things like dead leaves get into the tank.... are people retarded or what! ?!

RE: my road trip - 300D50 - 04-01-2011

The dead mice bring them in when they crawl into the tank through the screen hole/filler neck if it's stored outside the car. :p

RE: my road trip - larsalan - 04-09-2011

Here's a great new problem that I ran into on the second day of a 700 mi vacation. I started the car at some gas station. Kinda had a clunk and didn't start. In this car I always have to throw the shifter about to make sure the electronics are in order. This crappy start seemed like the electronics had cut out while the starter was winding.
Anyway, cranked it again and started up fine. The problem is that then it wouldn't shutoff. I figured the shutoff valve had gone but I pulled a vacuum on it cheerleader style and it shut off. It looks like the vacuum line is fine in the engine bay. Where might the trouble be? In the dash near the ignition tumbler or what?
Till then I will be sucking this car off, I guess she's earned it.

RE: my road trip - 300D50 - 04-09-2011

Check the vac line to make sure it's free of cracks/disintegrated rubber.

RE: my road trip - larsalan - 04-09-2011

^ yes I have checked the line up to the firewall and then I don't know where it goes. Do I have to tear apart the dash to get a look at it? I wonder what could have happened, it was working fine then murphy's law ya' know.

max loves to ride in the benz

haha cool

RE: my road trip - larsalan - 04-29-2011

Here is just a little evidence of water injection cleaning out my intake manifold. I'm sure it would have taken much longer. I would say the gunk was just starting to let go after about 60 gallons of water.

RE: my road trip - 300D50 - 04-29-2011

Even soaking the log intake in a solvent tank didn't remove it all for me...

RE: my road trip - larsalan - 05-11-2011

those cylinder walls look/feel pretty smooth.

RE: my road trip - Captain America - 05-11-2011

Looks like sooooo much room for bigger valves!

RE: my road trip - larsalan - 05-14-2011

Wow, there was like 18lbs/$27 of wiring under the dash!

Anyone want some engine internals? I would like to see them go into a motor. I've got no where to keep them oiled up and stored so they'll get melted down unless somebody will make use of them.
I have valves, camshaft/towers
Soon more stuffs

RE: my road trip - larsalan - 05-20-2011

This might be the official last leg of this road trip, on the way to the scrap yard.
