om606 head on a om603? - willbhere4u - 10-26-2010

Has any body put an om606 head on an om603???

I thought I read about a difference in pistons somewhere

what would it really take to do that swap??? head, intake, exhaust, pistons?

I bet a cheap core could be ordered up if it was a viable option?

Two differences that I've seen:

Oil supply from block to head is larger on the 606. Presumably to flow more oil to the twin cams

Piston heads are cut differently for the different valve arrangement

Well I'm looking at putting a new head in my 1987 300sdl or

buy a running 606 and swap it in there! presumably the om603 transmission and injection pump will fit the om606 engine

or buy an om606 core engine with a knock or something and swap all the necessary parts to switch heads!

I wonder if the oil passage issue would be a big deal?

I was thinking just swap the pistons, head and manifolds on to the 603 block use the stock om603 pump and save some money maybe gain a few hp in the process!

for under 2k I would rather make something cool while I'm in there and save a few bucks

IP and tranny from 603 will fit 606.

If you want to gain few hp, screw the IP on your 603. If you want lots of power, then why build an engine with 606 head and 603 bottom end? Swap original turbo engine in.

I agree. It would be far less labor intensive and costly to just swap in a good 606 donor.

Point taken it looks like a good running om606 turbo from a 1998 e300d can be had for between $1750-2500 online here in the U.S.

looks like I will have to start saving!

my thought was to buy a core 606 and rebuild the 603 with 606 parts
for cheep but in the end with machine work would probably top buying a running 606? I would be curious if the rods and pistons would even swap to a 603 crank/block?

Who knows if the crank would even interchange?

Do the om606 engines have a vacuum pump???

my om603 is a turbo engine already but is in need of a nearly impossible to find $1500 cylinder head!

I'm not to worried about power! But if I'm in the market for around 1500 bucks a Hi mileage running om606 engines can be had for about the same money!

And a non running om606 core even cheaper for some kind of hybrid rebuild?

your 603 head is cracked already?

RE: om606 head on a om603? - willbhere4u - 10-27-2010

Yea it is but it's not bad yet! the PO was probably driving it around like this!

It's pressurizing the cooling system but it's not yet burning coolant or mixing the oil and coolant yet

So I have some time to save up I hope! luckily I have other Mercedes diesels to drive as well

RE: om606 head on a om603? - willbhere4u - 10-29-2010

There are two engine's here in Colorado but they want 3k a piece for them both at the same place! one is 105k the other is 115k
complete with turbo and all!
