Front seal change? - Jtn190D - 10-16-2010

Hey all,

I believe the front seal on the engine is bad in the 190D. It just started leaking oil by the harmonic balancer. What does it involve to change? if its bad or what else could be the problem? Has any one done this job?

Thanks for your input guys!

Any one?

I don't know on the om60? engine's

I think on the OM616/7 engines you have to loosen the crankshaft and drop it down far enough to put a new seal in?? but maybe I'm thinking of the rear seal???

It can be

a) crankshaft front seal. Need to take the aux belt and balancer off. The seal actually sits on the balancer, not on the crank.

b) timing cover gasket behind the alternator.

I suspected my crank seal leaked and changed it, but leak didn't stop. I removed the alternator and its stand from the block, only then the leak became visible.

Either way, the hardest part it removing the balancer. Not sure about OM601-602, but on OM606 it's held by "the king bolt" which needs over 400Nm to open.

Thanks a lot Muuris for the reply, I'll have to check into this more before I start tearing apart things. Does any one know if I'll need to remove the radiators?

You should have enough room to remove the large bolt holding the balancer with just removing the fan. And shroud

No need to remove radiator with 4-5 cylinder engines.
