87 300D engine into 85 123 - 98taco3 - 09-09-2010

Well had some really bad luck with my 85 300D last weekend. Blew a head gasket and blew oil and coolant all over Eisenhower pass. The engine still starts but is not happy Angry I guess fixing it up and getting everything running right bit me in the behind. Only owned the car 2 months now. Im weighing my options and am leaning towards an engine swap as opposed to rebuilding the 617. I was curious if it had been done and if anyone had specifics as to motor mounts/spacing in the engine compartment. is the transmission bolt pattern/mounting the same? Flexplate? I can buy either a 617 or the 87 engine for the same price shipped with a warranty. Figured id get it to scoot a bit more if ive got to pull the engine anyways. Any thoughts?

I think a om603 would be cool, but a om606 would be way cooler!

The 603 will be alot harder obviously. Different mount arms (gonna make new ones yourself right?), different transmission bolt pattern (actually not that big of a deal if you can find a 603 transmission, or a 190e manual trans). The transmission output shaft is bigger on the 603 cars, but that is swappable to the smaller one.

motor mounts dont bother me, making a set is no big deal. So the trans would need to be changed. Also not to much of a problem but more $$$. Maybe have to find a wrecked car and go that route.

I ave a friend, that dismantles many Mercedes vehicles. You could get a 603 in great shape, in the $1000 ball park range.

Ya that seems to be the going rate just about everywhere cept a very few. Found a used one online for 3K! And just the engine. Im going to go look in the pick and pulls next week and see what i cant find. If i can score an engine and a trans it may have to be a go. The car now has a HUGE oil/coolant spot under it, guess i really trashed it lol

I bought my 1987 300sdl om603 for $500 off C-list and had it running and driving in a week end!

but with the OM603 any 5 spd manual trans from a w201 or w124 will bolt right up to it!!!

I think you can use engine mountings from a 300SDL, but I`m not quite sure.
