lighten the flywheel? - lowriderdog37 - 03-24-2008

I am in the middle of my 4-speed conversion ('85 300CD). While I have it out, has anybody tried shaving a few pounds off the flywheel? Any input?

If you are using a flywheel from a 240D in your conversion then it is already a few pounds lighter than the flywheels that came on 617 engines. The lighter 240D flywheel works fine, but I don't think I would go any lighter.

Mine is from a 200D but I do not know if there is a difference between 200-240D.

You are aware that you will need to grind the crankshaft pilot or the pilot bearing on an 85 correct?

Ah, good point! I forgot about that. Yes, you'll need to machine the pilot bearing hole, buy a custom sized bearing or use a small bearing and machine a brass sleeve to fit around it.

I took my bearing to a grinder.

I didn't get a bearing with the trans I bought. Do you happen to know what size it is off hand? Or is it something I can just pick up at my local mechanics shop?

I didn't know anything about that...thanks for the heads up!

Its a common bearing, I know that much. Check out autohauseaz or fastlane for the part, look up a 240d manual.

I don't that its been mentioned in your threads here or else where but you will need to adjust the length of the shifting rods as well.

I got mine from NAPA.
