Cant get the coolant temp gauge to work. It's making me Angry !

RE: Captain's '82 300D - sassparilla_kid - 01-07-2013

Mine bounces around so I never know temp, I know how you feel

RE: Captain's '82 300D - Captain America - 01-07-2013

Use to work perfect in both cars. I don't understand... its a simple circuit

RE: Captain's '82 300D - DeliveryValve - 01-07-2013

Bad gauge? Faulty connection? Or bad sender? Only things I can think of.[/align]

RE: Captain's '82 300D - Simpler=Better - 01-07-2013

90% of the time it's a ground. The gauge grounds through the plug in the head right? then to the block, then ground strap, then chassis. Hot side ot harness, fuse box, gauge cluster. cluster grounds to dash support to chassis.

RE: Captain's '82 300D - Raarasutra - 01-07-2013

I just read through all 7 pages, and I am very inspired!

I wish I could spend more time working on my 300D... I will be rereading all of this once mine is roadworthy so I can let the real fun begin Big Grin

I think you are right. Driving it around in the dirt, over bumps the cluster was doing all kinda of wacky things. Lights were turning on and off... I duuno where to look though. Guess I'll check the cluster ground and thewn the hot side. The engine is grounded to the chassis in the factory location and also back to the battery in the trunk with 1/0 gauge welding wire, all soldered and crimped connections. Thanks for the ideas guys!

Thanks for the kind words. This build has taken way to long but it's totally worth it!

Got her on the road tonight!!!!

I really only got the bare minimum done to drive it, so no water plumbing yet for intercooler, no fans on the radiator (using A/C aux fan) and haven't played with the pump yet...

Surprisingly it runs strong and isn't really slow at all. She gets up and goes. Don't know what boost is, or oil pressure, or coolant temp, or mph.... lol, I only have RPM at the moment! Exclamation

Feel free to follow me on Instagram for the latest pics. Captain___America (That's 3 underscores)

On first test, the trans stalled up to 2k rpm, but again I dunno what kind of boost I'm building there. Driving around it feels like the torque converter locks at 2500rpm Smile

RE: Captain's '82 300D - Simpler=Better - 01-15-2013

WOOHOO!!!

As for grounds, my trunk tail light ground rusted out and made everything weird when the signals couldn't complete their normal route-don't forget to check that one too.

RE: Captain's '82 300D - Captain America - 01-15-2013

Cool. Thanks! On the bright side, the reverse lights don't blow the fuse anymore, lol dunno what changed there haha. Seems like everything I own is riddled with electrical issues haha

RE: Captain's '82 300D - Captain America - 01-21-2013

Car was driving pretty good. Then an oil line blew off. Motor seems ok, turbo needs a rebuild.... Off to performance Techniques..

RE: Captain's '82 300D - Simpler=Better - 01-21-2013

Well that sucks. Time for a flared line I guess. Mine never blew off (similar setup)

RE: Captain's '82 300D - Captain America - 01-21-2013

I should have re torqued the clamps after a few heat cycles, all of them were only snug... a flare would help like the stock lines have the little bubble at the end. Had to cut 2 lines down to size so lost the flare at the end.

RE: Captain's '82 300D - Captain America - 01-23-2013

Got the turbo to Performance Techniques today. Wont know till its apart but as long as the turbine shaft isnt damaged, James said hes got extra compressor wheels and center housings if needed that he'd give me for no charge. Pretty awesome if you ask me! Going to inquire about a ball bearing upgrade though.

RE: Captain's '82 300D - Captain America - 01-24-2013

Ouch, Lol. Looks like I've got some Dirty Diesel Algae Problems. .. Don't think it should be black, eh?

RE: Captain's '82 300D - Simpler=Better - 01-24-2013

That's an awesome aux tank. Do you just drive for a month between fillups?

If you're going to upgrade your turbo, you might as well go VNT....

RE: Captain's '82 300D - Captain America - 01-24-2013

Never tested it because the fuel gauge was untrustworthy ...

IDK, vnt seems like a pain in the ass. This Turbo spools by 2k and will support more power than I could ever hope to make with a 617 ... (upwards of 350)

RE: Captain's '82 300D - Captain America - 02-16-2013

Hmmm, so whats happened? A LOT!

Got the turbo back, 325$ later, lol. Everything is new...

Then I looked for a new fuel tank sending unit. @ 200$, I decided to just take it apart and clean it... Here it is soaking in mineral spirits. Worked good to clean it off

Bought a turbo blanket, first thing that happened when snugging it up was one of the rivets broke. So had to re-rivet the hook on..

THEN I went to the King of the Hammers race Big Grin

Oh man... there are trucks there worth over $250k and the Mercedes got the most attention lol. I got thumbs up, fuck yeahs, and right ons everywhere I went. ppl were amazed.

First I aired down to 20 PSI and it felt like I was driving a boat haha

I was out playin in the sand dunes and a bunch of people stopped me because they wanted pictures and video haha

My buddy loves my car. He bought a '82 300D non turbo (ouch haha)

She cleans up kinda nice! Heart

Couple nights ago I decided to time the IP..

It was at 22°?

Now she is 27ish Runs fuggin awesome!

Still need to play with IP fuel and plumb the intercooler... Pretty happy now thoughExclamation Big Grin

Heres a IP drip timing video

RE: Captain's '82 300D - sassparilla_kid - 02-26-2013

So is that vent port going to the reservoir or..? I'm a little confused lol, I haven't heard of open vs. closed before. Also, where did you get that thing and how difficult was it to make fit?

RE: Captain's '82 300D - Captain America - 03-08-2013

(02-26-2013, 07:50 PM)sassparilla_kid So is that vent port going to the reservoir or..? I'm a little confused lol, I haven't heard of open vs. closed before. Also, where did you get that thing and how difficult was it to make fit?

Yes the top of the radiator will be vented to the stock expansion tank, in the same way the stock radiator is.

Open system: Has the radiator cap on the radiator
Closed system: Cap is on an expansion tank

They use a closed system when the radiator is not at the highest point. The fill point must be highest in the system. So in older cars where the top of the radiator is the highest, that is where the cap is and is an open system.

In newer cars they sit the radiator down in the chassis and use an "expansion tank" at the highest point and the cap goes there. Closed system

Both types of systems work great from what I've experienced.

I got the radiator from the place I use to work. Pro Comp Electronics (Made in china) and its a standard chevy radiator measuring 19" tall X 27" wide overall

Got my fan shroud started

3000 series .050" thick sheet aluminum, sheared and bent on a harbor freight press brake lol. Turned out bitchin

Just need to mount the shroud to the radiator and cut a 16" hole in it

Keep up the good work

RE: Captain's '82 300D - sassparilla_kid - 07-08-2013

I think it needs a welded diff first

RE: Captain's '82 300D - Captain America - 07-08-2013

Its mostly a driver so I wouldn't want to wear out tires and look like a jackass driving around a parking lot, lol. A limited slip would be nice though!

There has been much done since the last update so I need to get on updating this thread haha

I'm curious if the XXL prechambers did anything good? bad? melty?

Have been driving it this way a week now and nothing melty yet but gawd it has lots of power. Who could have known a 300D could be quick? My VDO pyro is super slow so I need a new gauge before I up the fuel further. I'm not done yet

RE: Captain's '82 300D - sassparilla_kid - 02-14-2014

Lmao! I have nothing to compare to. I put the XXL chambers in with new injectors from Greezer. And yes, Simpler=Better drilled and reamed them. I just did the finish work. i do know one thing... The poor 617 make a shit ton more power as it is and im

RE: Captain's '82 300D - MFSuper90 - 02-16-2014

I have to say that cap'n has more hours into those PCs than I do, I just hogged em' out and "let" him deburr them-that's the PITA part.

They look bitching though right!?! Fuck dude, making so much power now that it ripped the rubber on the driveshaft center support! I had to change it last night

RE: Captain's '82 300D - MFSuper90 - 02-16-2014

Holy tits, those things are massive!
I'm not gonna make the drip hole bigger tho
So you drilled them with a carbide bit then reamed them to the correct size with a carbide reamer?

RE: Captain's '82 300D - raysorenson - 02-16-2014

That's HUGE. Triple the area maybe?

RE: Captain's '82 300D - Captain America - 02-16-2014

Have to look back at messages with Simpler=Better and Mr. OM616 but OM616 basically told me in one of the last messages that he didn't think we could go too big haha. He did not reccomend opening up the bottoms hole, but oh well. My 300 sings and I still have fuel to add. I mean I MOVES!!!!

I also fogot to mention the burn tube was opened to 9/16" over the tiny hole that was in the chambers I pulled from this motor. I need to get a rolling video up stat!

RE: Captain's '82 300D - lgreeley83 - 02-16-2014

So carbide bits an dreamers or just regular old bits and reamers? Sorry to be a PIA, I'm just trying to get my shit in order so I can get them ordered and get er done.

So did you use a different washer for the injector since you opened up the burn tube?

RE: Captain's '82 300D - lgreeley83 - 02-16-2014

Lol I remember reading early discussions where everybody thought the car would explode or whatever other assortment of ideas. Glad it's working out. Ill be doing this .... someday..

No sir. I've found different years had different sizes. The '85 chambers has close to the same as the reamed chambers Simpler=better used while mine were much smaller. I used heat shields supplied by Mercedes Source.

Yes, more videos soon! As I stated, I was told that the holes could not be too big.... I plan to get a legit EGT ASAP then I will turn the fuel up more and go from there. As it stands. I could be happy where the fuel is at, but I always like moar lol

RE: Captain's '82 300D - capflya - 02-16-2014

MOAR FUEL! Big Grin

RE: Captain's '82 300D - Simpler=Better - 02-17-2014

A reamer is only good for taking off a small amount of material, and runs at a low RPM. So to get the XXL holes, it took multiple steps. IIRC it was 1/8" on everything, then .156" on the front 3. The burn tubes were roughed with a 1/2" but and then a 9/16" reamer, IIRC. I forget the details, but they're all the same across 5 chambers which is what matters.

He may still melt the PC tips-there's significantly less material, and Merc reduced the hole size to make for a smoother burning quieter engine. But we will never know until one way when something goes bang Smile

So, uh where's the video huh!?!??!!

RE: Captain's '82 300D - sassparilla_kid - 02-17-2014
