Adding an overdrive gear system. - Actros617 - 06-15-2010

Is this possible for a 722.118 transmission?? I've seen some that attaches to the rear of the transmission.

No doubt, but good luck fitting anything that size in the tunnel. Even then, a new unit costs about the average value of the car.

The old Laycock-de Normanville Overdrive from the 60's Rootes group cars, (Crysler) would be a good size, Pretty small, but prolly near impossible to fit, Usually, it formed the 'extension-housing' of the gearbox bolted up to the main case. The Output shaft of the box was a special, and formed the imput-shaft of the Overdrive...

--But, Its Small enough, 'bout 6" diameter!

Had a ratio of 0.86 as I recall.....

The Gear Vendors Is crap! Dont do it!!!!!!

Reason:

The gear vendors relies on line pressure to shift. Line pressure is achieved by the pump in the GV unit which is driven by the output shaft of the Benzomatic.

Bottom line:
The shift from 1st gear to 1st over would take an hour but the shifts would get better the faster you are moving.
If you are only interested in using it as an overdrive after 4th gear then you would be fine.

That's a name from way out of the past! My Dad had a Triumph TR3 equipped with one of those. Had a switch on the dash to engage/disengage.

I was thinking the electric overdrive unit from an old Volvo modified to on to a Benz 4spd would be cool but a good amount of work!
