om617...would you add an intercooler? - mr_manny - 06-13-2010

I have begun a project, and may provide an opportunity to add an intercooler.
I have read several posts, and the A/W intercoolers seems to be preferred.

My primarily concern, which may not be a valid...is high EGTs.
I believe most intercoolers are capable of addressing this.

If you had an opportunity to add one, which design would you choose?

Would you choose to run a A/W cooler for shorter runs, more mounting options and low speed efficiency?

Would you choose a standard front mounting type that relies on flowing air?
This design does not require additional components like an electric water pump to circulate water...

Would you lean towards a stock horizontal saab type, that utilizes an electric fan to make up for the restricted location.

or

Would you not run one at all, as these motors will always operate below any EGTs of concern?

thanks,
manny

on both sites dude...

if we knew the project , we could reply more easily

if you havent played with the pump stop while your ahead

We need more info to give a good answer.

What kind of vehicle; Will it be a daily driver? Drag racer? Autocross? Rally? A swap into a rock crawler? A swap into a pickup?

What is your power goal; Top end peak horsepower? Stump pulling low end torque? Broad, flat power curve? Fast spooling VNT? Slow spooling HX40?

High EGTs are a combination of many things. Exhaust restriction (turbo and exhaust system), high air inlet temperatures (climate), long injection duration (stock injection pump) and naturally low VE (stock engine). An intercooler will help with some things and do nothing for others.

Such as mine; the intercooler does make a significant difference in how long I can run WOT, but I still hit the temperature limit eventually because of the 5.5mm injection pump's long injection duration.

Awe Forced, Can't we just have all of the above? lol

Not from experience, but I am still an advocate of running the freon circut through the water resivior in an A/W setup.

As am I, but I have other plans for the space once occupied by the compressor. Wink

Okay I'll answer Forced's Qs...

'82 300D, Daily Driver, autocross and rally (Reliable performance), Best all around performance (good balance of both bottom and top end) possibly something you can change on the fly? Garrett T3 with 60 trim comp wheel.

Wheres the best place to start after all the normal catch up on the neglected maintenance like valve adjustment, cam timing, diesel purge, fuel filters, alda cleaning, waste-gate adjustment (manual boost controller), gauges etc...

Don't mean to hijack this thread but, are the stock turbos on a OM617.95 clockable meaning that the intake part of the turbo is rotatable so you can install a intercooler.

Yessir, unless I'm wrong lol

RE: om617...would you add an intercooler? - mr_manny - 06-15-2010

no worries on hijack, believe there's enough educating to go around Smile

my project:
om617 will be replacing the stock straight6 in my early toyota landcruiser (no a daily driver).

goal:
Primarily motor longevity...reason for keeping EGT's well below anything of concern.

questions around performance:
I am interested in possibly removing the IP limiter...currently don't understand this mod.
Other then that, try to bump boost to 12 or so (if possible w/stock turbo).

It's starting to look like a good starting point would be a boost gauge and Pyrometer.
After some seat time, If EGTs get up there I'll know an intercooler would be a great mod for piece of mind...

currently the only potentially performance oriented mod is the 85 only cat bypass:
