w210 idle problems - jagoras - 05-12-2010

my mom has a 1998 e300 turbodiesel, the car looks and runs amazing, but when you put the car in neutral or in park it starts shaking, almost like the injectors are clogged. when the car is in drive there is no sign of this, the car does this when it's warm as well, so it has nothing to do with the car being cold. Has anybody come across this problem, or does anybody have an answer for this?

Does it get worse when it is in reverse? The first thing that comes to mind is motor mounts...

no. it doesn't, it just started...and if it was motor mounts, it would be doing this constantly, and it would bang real hard while shifting into gears. i feel it's somehow related to fuel air ratio, but i can't put my finger on it.

My first thought is mounts as well. The mounts on this car are liquid filled and if the bladder ruptures, it can get real bad instantly. My car was shaking through to the very chassis when I bought it and new mounts solved the problem immediately.

the thing is that it only happens sometimes when the car is in neutral or in park. i drove it all day yesterday and it didn't happen once....i drove it last week and it did it to me once while i parked the car. it seems like its misfires likea gas car does. it's really strange.

I know I have ran into this before, but of course I cant remember what the fix was. I agree first check the motor mounts AND transmission mount, if you have more than 120k and they are original it might just be a good idea to replace all 3. The only other thing I can think of that would give you a rough idle (intermittently) and no check engine light, are the flaps inside the intake manifold are gummed up and sometimes getting stuck.
If something else comes to mind I will get back to you.

Check and see if there are ANY diesel leaks around the injection pump. It could very well be air getting into the fuel lines or the delivery valves leaking.

i did fail to mention that this started happenning after my dad replaced the fuel filters. we did see some bubbles in the air lines, but they went away after a while. i guess there is no way to manually pump the air in the lines. we assumed that there might be some garbage and air in the lines, and that the shaking and vibration would eventually go away....but here i am trying to get some answers from you guys.

RE: w210 idle problems - E300TSC - 05-15-2010

OK, that's good info. One odd thing about the pre-filter is that most often, it does not come with a lower O-ring. Many people don't notice this and reassemble it with the ring missing which makes it nearly impossible to start and if started, it may run poorly at times.

RE: w210 idle problems - jagoras - 05-16-2010

i'll look into that....that's something that might be a possibility. thanks for your help.
