Tomorrow is the big day. I am excited. Pics coming

RE: My 1987 300D - Simpler=Better - 11-18-2012

IT'S ABOUT DAMN TIME!

Good luck Smile

RE: My 1987 300D - led-panzer - 11-19-2012

^^^ Hear hear!
Good luck man, I'm really looking forward to how this turns out

RE: My 1987 300D - winmutt - 11-19-2012

Bout to get started, gotta run to store for some last minute supplies.

RE: My 1987 300D - dieselmeken - 11-19-2012

How many days does it take to do the tuning?

RE: My 1987 300D - winmutt - 11-19-2012

The head is off, the block is prepped, my back and quads are aching! Pictures and some questions later tonight.

RE: My 1987 300D - winmutt - 11-20-2012

I completely noobed myself today and broke off the pin on the cam shaft trying to reassemble it. Luckily, I had a spare!

RE: My 1987 300D - winmutt - 11-21-2012

Had hoped to get the car running with old IP but new turbo and head today. Ran into a slight snag with the turbo, apparently not all HX30W are created equal. The new one is a twin scroll and has a bigger exhaust housing and the wastegate arm sits out further. I should have that fixed tomorrow before turkey time. I have about 22 or so pics I took that I will post with some details later. For now you can see them here. https://picasaweb.google.com/110184791268815842578/OffWithHerHead?authuser=0&feat=directlink

Sadly its not nearly as many as I thought I had taken....

Looking good! Did you find any issues with the old head or gasket? Mine has been eating coolant and I'm concerned I may have some damage from the water on the bottom end when I remove the head.

Also, please take lots of photos of your oils line for your New turbo please!

RE: My 1987 300D - winmutt - 11-22-2012

After turning the engine by hand a million times, I turned her over till the battery died (building up oil pressure). Charging now until turkey time is over.

The head gasket had eaten away where the water jackets come up in one place and the others were fairly corroded. Looks like there was some gas passing between #1 and #2 as well even though the hg rings were shiny.

The turbo is just a newer version of the one I had already upgraded too. The only modification that was required was to put a funky adapter on the existing oil feed (name of connector escapes me). My old one will be up for sale. Not sure how it will fit with the fed manifold but it fits well enough with the euro one. Not sure how I can get a bigger turbo in there.

RE: My 1987 300D - jonbobshinigin - 11-22-2012

Mmm...I've been removing my coolant cap after see drive. Otherwise the pressure pushes back into the cylinder(s) with coolant. If I don't de-pressurize, my car engine eats coolant very quickly.

I know you may have mentioned this in another post but I don't remember: what are you plans for your transmission? Is it gonna hold up to the power?

I was gonna have Jonathan at Blue Ridge Mercedes rebuild my auto box once I do my pump upgrade.

Thanks for keeping is posted! Keep up the good work.

RE: My 1987 300D - winmutt - 11-23-2012

Coolant is going into oil? Trans is a 190d (number escapes me right now) 5spd, gonna take it easy till I can find a 16v or 6 speed.

RE: My 1987 300D - jonbobshinigin - 11-23-2012

No coolant or oil mixing, but while running the cylinder pressure leaks and over pressurized and overheats cooling system.

RE: My 1987 300D - winmutt - 11-23-2012

Sadly, I dont think I have enough time to get the pump mounted this weekend. I am also nervous about the 606 hg and want to run it for a few weeks at normal paces. Tomorrow I am going to put her back together for the shake down run.

RE: My 1987 300D - dieselmeken - 11-24-2012

Come on now. Its à 1 hour Job to swap The pump. For me that is

(11-24-2012, 03:15 PM)dieselmeken Come on now. Its à 1 hour Job to swap The pump. For me that is

So I talked myself into doing it tomorrow after I made this post. Today, I found out that my EGT gauge or sensor is busted, so I will def have to wait. Goran as excited as I am to get the pump in, I want to make sure I dont melt anything Big Grin

For now, everything is buttoned up and ready for DD till I get back from Germany, when I will have time and money to git er dun.

Unfortunately, based on the wavy mirror polish on cyl #2 and 3, I need new sleeves (and rod or?) to get rid of my clacking. For now I will just let her ride. The new turbo is spooling quick and I put an old manual boost controller on. It really hauls.

RE: My 1987 300D - jonbobshinigin - 11-26-2012

You promised pictures...

RE: My 1987 300D - winmutt - 01-22-2013

These? https://picasaweb.google.com/110184791268815842578/OffWithHerHead

Today I have to replace the #4 injector line and I have all the bits and pieces for the line holders.

Since I have to take the intake off.... Might as well do the IP!!!! EGT sensor be damned.

Do it!!

If you blow it up it just means its OM606 time

RE: My 1987 300D - Bangaway - 01-23-2013

Blow it up. Are you tellin me you don't have dieselmeken's free pump on yet.

RE: My 1987 300D - raysorenson - 01-23-2013

Finally! Since I plan to go this route eventually with similar output, I'm super interested.

Do you still have the basket behind the vac pump? I left mine in. One less tool to lose.

Intercooling or instrumentation?Wink

Clutch?

No way, I paid like $3 for the basket 2 years ago. I have a brand new one laying around now, there was already a basket in.

Nope, Got it right before tgiving and then left for 3 weeks to the father land. Its on now and I'm cranking and charging and cranking and charging and cranking and charging and cranking and charging and cranking and charging and cranking and charging and cranking and charging and cranking and charging and cranking and charging and cranking and charging and cranking and charging.....

Got some bubbles at the pump on the last one so one or two more rounds and it should run.

RE: My 1987 300D - willbhere4u - 01-26-2013

Take some video for the rest of us!

RE: My 1987 300D - TheDon - 01-26-2013

Call a dealership, samstag sales, etc and inquire. $275. I was blown away too.

RE: My 1987 300D - winmutt - 01-27-2013

Needs some sorting, idle needs improvement and too much smoke at idle. But great googly moogly when the turbo kicks in the only thing keeping the car on the ground is 12" tires.

Pretty sure these items are fixable, vids to come when things are sorted.

RE: My 1987 300D - winmutt - 01-27-2013

After checking the timing 4x and even adjusting timing while idling, I finally decided to turn down the ALDA a turn and the smoke is gone. I think the poor compression is to blame. Also my tach has been non op and as a result the ELR which isnt helping. I started debugging the tach and found that its not generating any voltage at idle or revved. Sadly I swapped the OVP in the process and the old one is non op as well now. Going to see if it just needs a reflow later tonight. In the mean time, no turn signals.

RE: My 1987 300D - Simpler=Better - 01-27-2013

Electrical is always fun Smile

We don't care if it lopes or smokes, it's the first fitment. We just want to see it run!

RE: My 1987 300D - raysorenson - 01-27-2013

How much boost?

At what rpm does it make say, .7 bar and then full boost?

Is your clutch holding up?

Do you have a stock ALDA or one of Meken's units?

Is it louder?

Sorry for all the questions. This is the parsed down version =)

RE: My 1987 300D - winmutt - 02-01-2013

In case anyone has been wondering, I have been too far under the weather to do any work. Monday night I was up till 2 am, working through the ELR issue only to find out I was testing the wrong things! OVP is fine (now I have a spare) as is tach sensor(ditto). I even think at this point ELR must be working, when I plugged the tach sensor in the car revs. So maybe all along its just the tach itself. Complete failures on my end. Tomorrow I will put it back together and try the timing one more time. Shopped around for a new engine (need to call and get the compression).

RE: My 1987 300D - willbhere4u - 02-01-2013

I might be pulling my om603 soon it's an 87 300SDL has 212k miles. I have no idea on compression yet. It has a cracked #14 head. It's not mixing any fluids yet it's just pressurizing the cooling system it Runs good! I need to save all of the motor mounts and the injection pump and oil filter housing and accessories. For my om606 swap!

RE: My 1987 300D - Ksteen2 - 02-01-2013

videos please Wink

RE: My 1987 300D - winmutt - 02-02-2013

So timing is good. Verified by adjusting timing with car running. Found that with #1 and #3 lines that my smoke issues are almost nil. Now, I did have these injectors serviced about a year ago, so I assume they are OK. I have swapped #1 and #4 to see if it follows. IIRC, I have already been through this dance with #1.... Time to start looking for a new engine I think.

RE: My 1987 300D - winmutt - 02-27-2013

In america, when we feel down, we go shopping. So while I wait for a good opportunity to pop the pistons out and give the walls a fresh scrubber.....

Why yes I think it will fit!

RE: My 1987 300D - TheDon - 02-27-2013

Where did you get it?

RE: My 1987 300D - Simpler=Better - 02-28-2013

Looks like it's from a JDM

RE: My 1987 300D - raysorenson - 02-28-2013

http://auburn.craigslist.org/cto/3601726672.html

It's been there a while, I even though about picking it up myself. I'll bet you even have a spare trans too.

RE: My 1987 300D - 95e300dez - 03-01-2013

How much did you pay and where I made my own and wonder what people are paying for one?

120 barely used including shipping from UAE. Price was good and color matched interior... This is not the ad I responded to.

This is the one I answered http://www.benzworld.org/forums/sale-wanted-trade-giveaway/1697548-new-w124-front-brace-bar.html

He also has a number of other things for sale, check his threads. According to him any of the 6 and 8 pot calipers bolt on the w124. That is sexy.

Need that like a hole in the head. I do have a spare trans I'll sell ya cheap. Needs a front seal but was fine other than that. Was from my 5spd swap.

RE: My 1987 300D - raysorenson - 03-01-2013

Oh hell no. I've got too much stuff at the house without a(nother) parts car in the mix. I've even got the same trans you do sitting on a shelf in the garage. I was thinking engine donor for you.

RE: My 1987 300D - winmutt - 04-11-2013

I bought this set of momo rims for $60 for all 4 with toyo proxes on them, PO had taken a pressure washer to them ant the paint peeled off. 17"x8.5 iirc. 20 bux in rattle can paint and sandpaper later... (one of the wheels was still drying)
