Block heater - ForcedInduction - 02-17-2010

Can the AC heater be run on 12VDC? I'm pretty sure the stock block heater is 400 or 800 watts (anyone have a killawatt to measure theirs?). 30-60amps, doable for the stock alternator but mine was upgraded to 80amps.

The idea isn't to preheat the engine, but to get a running engine warm faster.
VW has a similar system that uses 3 large glowplugs to preheat the coolant.

The Peugeot 306 HDI uses something similar but with 4 plugs inline to the cabin heater.

You can run it on 12VDC but since 12V is about 1/10th of the normal 120V then the heater will only deliver 1/10th of it's capacity.

W=V*A

What he said...

My CDI has an electronic heating element for the coolant, but obviously that is going to be expensive and/or hard to find.

Beru Glow PLugs for Aux Heaters

Glow Plug for Auxiliary Heaters (Type GH)

The comforts of auxiliary heaters are appreciated by more and more car drivers. BERU type GH glow plugs are used so that even at icy cold, the car is pleasantly warm on getting in and scratching ice is superfluous.

BERU glow plugs are used for the rapid heating of cooling water or in auxiliary heaters.

Technical Features

Sheathed or coil glow plug
For usage in auxiliary heaters (in petrol or diesel cars)

only thing i know to work great is diesel giants coolant hose heater. i kow you dont want preheater but in less then 2 hrs the engine is hot.

RE: Block heater - ForcedInduction - 02-19-2010

I dug out an old 1200w heater with 5/8" nipples. Think 120w would even be worth the bother of opening the cooling system?

I haven't had any luck finding a Peugeot heater.

RE: Block heater - E300TSC - 02-19-2010

120w will deliver 410 BTU/hr of energy to the cooling system.

If the 617 system holds 8.3l, the 120W will raise the temp of the coolant by 22 deg f in an hour which seems hardly worth it.

I think the best thing would be to "build" a Webasto type heater to run off your fuel while the engine is warming up.

Maybe you could even build an exhaust bypass system and route your exhaust through an A?W intercooler of types and use that to preheat your coolant for faster warmups, when it's warmed up you could re-route your exhaust to your favorite style straight pipe.

(02-17-2010, 06:31 AM)ForcedInduction mine was upgraded to 80amps.

What years/models had the 80amp alternator? I think i remember reading they came on a SEL..or SL?
Its a direct swap right?

RE: Block heater - erling66 - 04-01-2011

Why not use regular diesel glow plugs to heat your coolant? I guess they are 100-150watt each. Then you just put as many as you need(that your alternator can handle)

RE: Block heater - erling66 - 04-01-2011

Just got a better idea :o)
Put a pipe outside your waste-gate pipe and connect it to your coolant system and run an el-pump to circulate the coolant. Then you open the waste-gate when you need to heat the engine quickly. If you don't have an external WG, you will have to run a bypass tube at your down pipe that is operated by a valve. This explanation is simplified but I think you get the idea

Saab 900. No, it requires upgraded wiring and cars with AC require the back half to be re-clocked to clear the tube.

RE: Block heater - garage - 04-02-2011

Hmmm, i coulda swore i read somthing about a different alt off a gasser Mercedes..

RE: Block heater - 300D50 - 04-02-2011

If you can get me a sample of the plugs, I can make a housing to hold them if needed.

RE: Block heater - garage - 04-02-2011

Hmm, i must have read somthing wrong, i can only find info on the saap alternator.

Thanks for the offer 300D50, i wont be upgrading the alt on this car very soon though...unless i can find a direct swap.
