Crossflow cylinder head...only on the OM603 + OM606...or? - HoleshotHolset - 05-20-2008

As the subject implies - I'm wondering if the only two Merc IDI's ('commonly' found/available in the US...) with crossflow cylinder heads are the OM603 12-valve and the OM606 24-valve...?

The OM617.952 seems to be the absolute most bulletproof engine out of all the Merc IDI's, but it doesn't seem optimal from a HP application...

(I prefer crossflow heads for the obvious performance gains possible and better engine bay layout...)

Thanks!

Beers,

Matt

The 602 has a cross-flow head too. It was found in the 190Ds

OM602, eh?

That's a new one for me...how does it stack up to the 617 in terms of being bulletproof?
Pretty good according to wiki - which we all know is ALWAYS right. Wink

Re: Crossflow cylinder head...only on the OM603 + OM606...or? - bgkast - 05-20-2008

It's basicly a 603 with one jug chopped off.

Re: Crossflow cylinder head...only on the OM603 + OM606...or? - HoleshotHolset - 05-20-2008

Does it have the same head cracking issues as the 603? :?
If so - that would be a strong case to stick with a 617 with the cast iron head and then deal with the intake/exhaust packaging issues...

It's odd that every now and then I see OM606 cars advertised as having a "new engine"...those engines are supposed to be really bulletproof. Either people are abusing them or they're not nearly bulletproof...or like any engine - some just are destined to fail from day one right off the assembly line.

I haven't heard of any issues with the 601/602 series, only the 603.

Good to know - thank you!
Sounds to me like a W124 chassis car with an OM602 has the potential to be a very sweet little ride. There's one for sale pretty close to where I work for $3000...I should go check it out.

The NA OM606 I drove in that '95 E300 recently was sort of gutless and I cringe to think about having to swap out pistons and other goodies to properly add a turbo...

I thought the W124 only used the 603. The W201 (190D) used the 602, but the turbo version is fairly rare.

The W140 S-class came with the 603 as well. If one were to invest the time/money, could the 603 be a viable engine? (maybe some performance mods too?)
We are looking at upgrading from the W126 to the W140 as our daily driver... 8-)

Re: Crossflow cylinder head...only on the OM603 + OM606...or? - GREASY_BEAST - 05-21-2008

depends what you call an upgrade... w140 has lots of cool bells and whistles that break and cause headaches, the w126 just goes and goes and goes.

Re: Crossflow cylinder head...only on the OM603 + OM606...or? - Telecommbrkr - 05-21-2008

That is very true, but the W140 is nice to look at too, and it just seems it would be nice to drive a newer benz. Are these unsurmountable repairs? What are the issues?

The early ('87) head of the 602 turbo was redesigned for the same reasons the early 603 head was redesigned. The improvement to the water-jacket area thickness is what is noted in the FSM. Early gaskets also were superceded with a better design.

ssangyong has an engine made by merc, its called a om662 aluminium head,5 cylinder.

Also later (90+) OM603's out of the W140's have connecting rod bending issues. They bend on stock power so any kind of performance gain will require the rods too be swapped where as early ones only have issues if you overheat them. I though OM617's have issues with the camshaft being too weak to support high boost?

Thanks,
Ian

I test drove one of these recently, same feeling, gutless. From a stand still it was passable (probably still slower than my wife NA TD) but overall I'd feel safer in an auto 240d, at least I wouldn't forget I was in a 40hp car!

RE: Crossflow cylinder head...only on the OM603 + OM606...or? - ForcedInduction - 03-17-2009

The OM606.91x is 115hp so it should be about as fast as a W123 300D.
