I was wondering if there was a list of gear ratios for year/models..
I bought a 240D that I have not picked up yet...I know already I want to drop/raise the gear ratio...
looking for something between 2.46 and 2.90 if possible because my 300TD turns around 3300rpms @ 70mph (I am not sure what gear ratio it would have! going to Turbo the car with the 4cyl...air/water intercooler...
Does anyone know what ratiops were in these cars becuase I have access to them for parts
1978 300CD N/A 5cyl and automatic
1985 300SEL- gasser
1984 300SD
A couple of newer gassers...not sure of the years
NOT sure what year models will go inot a 1982 240D

3.92, 3.69, 3.58, 3.54, 3.46, 3.07, 2.88 and 2.47 are the ratios that will bolt-into the W115/W123/W116/W126 (81-85) models. If you do any inter-chassis parts swapping you must adjust the axle shims to get the correct settings.
All 200D/220D 3.92
All 240D: 3.69
All 300 non-turbo: 3.46
300 turbo to 1984: 3.07
300 turbo 85: 2.88
All 280 3.58 or 3.54
All 230 and 250 3.69

For the 300TD, sure. It will be lacking some torque but it will lower highway RPMs and give better economy.
For the 240D, a 3.07 or 2.88 would be very stressful on the engine (especially if its a manual).

I am planning on building a SS header for a turbo add-on on the 240D and be able to take it on the freeway...up to 70mph...probably tack to HIGH.so I was thinking about adding 3.08 differential. Its an automatic right now, but I am working a blown motor 4spd manual car right now...
I should have clarified...I do not want to change the gear on my wagon, I was only using it for a reference______since it is the only Benz I have driven with any regularity.
The 1984 300SD I have now sports newer 15' wheels with 205's...not looking to change gear ratio right now...Def going to add an intercooler and some monark nozzles...and some minor mods the IP thanks to you and others here! I also have a big box of parts to put on; guide bushings, front wheel bearings, timing chain and tensioner, and few other things.
The wagon will be up for sale once the 300SD going! It will be my new Daily driver! I am NEW to the turbo game and the VGT is definitely worth looking into ...for the SD at a later date

What about the 2.65 rear from the 450SEL? Those are W116 cars so wouldn't it swap as well, or because of the hydro suspension would it not go? What did the 2.47 rear gear come in?

I am thinking about changing the gear ration in a 240d automatic/or manual 4spd...I have one of each NOW!
I am not changing the gears in the wagon...
does anyone know what ration would be in a 1985 300SEL gasser? and is it bolt in for a 1982/or 1981 240d

Unless you live in some kind of Flatland-esque environment I'd leave those 240D gears alone. I regularly drive my car between 70 and 90 mph (granted the 90 is downhill) and did so even before I removed the EGR butterfly and added a cold air intake, which I highly recommend because it does give the car a little more, and it needs everything it can get. That includes the gears. I'm getting around 28 mpg even while wringing the snot out of it. In short, the factory geared it that way for a reason - it works.
I routinely have the 616 spinning at the upper part of the rpm band for over an hour at a time, flying past cars with 2, 3, 4 times the horsepower. I've been doing it for almost a year and no problems with regular oil changes. I seriously doubt the people who make these goofy assumptions about the cars have ever driven one with a manual transmission, which is the only way to fly in my opinion. The car stock eats up miles on the highway. However I don't really find even a 300D turbo all that fun with an automatic, and a 240D/auto would probably be akin to automotive purgatory. Even more reason to leave the gears alone with a setup like that.
My car is currently halfway to being a very competent canyon runner/autocrosser, I'm planning on adding 15" wheels, 225 width tires, 126 big brakes, and a turbo. As far as canyon running with the CAI you have just enough power and the right gears to use it with that it's fun (and scary if you're a passenger!) even without the turbo. I've driven a few fast cars and while it's not world beating it is still fun. Four door, big assed Miata.

I have some ideas in mind! think I'm going to poke the good 616 in the blown 240D 4spd manual and add a turbo and intercooler, monarks nozzles...new clutch
the other 240D will probably get a rebuilt transmission with the cable! (eliminate the vacuum only tranny) and a 617 Turbo...later on of course...
