wtf, weird fuel problems
Car is '80 300TD (n/a), >180k miles, no other know issues except squealy belt that I need to fix. Just bought last week so I do not know history, but general mechanic inspection pre-purchase found no engine issues. Was fine until this problem showed up while going 55mph on flat ground at sea level on a warm day (no funky circumstances)

Symptoms:

Starts and idles fine
Will not rev above fairly low rpm range (no tach, maybe 1200ish at most)
In park/neutral, revs up and down between 600 and 1200ish slowly, while :)throttle is wide open.
In d/s/l moves very slow, barely more than idling forward

Replaaced fuel filters, plenty of fuel in tank, idles without issue for any period. Throttle wide open for 15+ min it just revs up and down slowly.

I've got video, will upload when home. I'm wondering if the IP could be to blame?

Other than the knocking....

Clean the fuel tank strainer. You can confirm before draining the tank by switching the supply and return lines.

Ill do one better and put a bottle of diesel in diesel purge style. Then I can see if anything is coming out the return at idle (to see if there is adequate flow/ pressure)

The knocking is an injector I think.

The knocking sounds a lot worse on the videos than in person, But as I was leaving yesterday, I was thinking that it does kind of sound like something from the bottom end.... especially when it idles.

I really think its an injector, the clink is most prominent at the injector and not the bottom end.

So is the knock on my 240's engine. A bad wrist pin sounds a lot like an injector.

moot point because the knock isnt immobilizing the car right now. the car is having fuel related issues and is stuck in random neighborhood, and i live in an area with almost no public transit. i have to get this thing running. im working on getting a ride over to the car today so any advice on diagnostics for when i can get to it would be awesome.

Sounds like your first priority should be to get a tow home. With the engine running flat towing any distance won't cause harm.

no better off towing home than dealing with it where it sits (neighorhood nearby). association in my neighborhood will fine the house if i work on the car there. if i cant fix where it sits, will have to take to mechanic

RE: wtf, weird fuel problems
sounds transmission or torque converter related personally. How big is the fine for working on the car in the yard?

All the wheels roll right? Big Grin Sounds like a stupid question, but theoretically a locked brake could be involved. Had this problem with a nissan, bad master pushrod adjustment kept two brakes engaged until they heated and would stop the vehicle. For the longest time I though it was a tranny problem, including the smoke, which I though was coming from the center of the car, until I put my hand on the rim trying to get a look under there and burned the bejesus out of myself

Could be worth making sure, also would indicate other driveline issues also

Do you have a mity vac? you could check how hard it is to pull fuel from the tank, and you can cut out the fuel delivery system by running the car off a 1 gal tank in the engine compartment.

how did your visit yesterday turn out?

RE: wtf, weird fuel problems
fixed it. there was a small linkage down between the IP and the block which was not connected to the IP. missed it in the dark, but found it when i went back yesterday afternoon. all is well now, tested it by going up to LA and back last night!

It was the Fromunda linkage near the bottom of the IP. Tongue
