Hi all

My rebuild project (1982 300GD with OM617NA) is progressing (albeit slowly). I am trying to cure a bad oil leak from the casing of the aftermarket turbo.

Any guesses what part of the turbo might be defective? Can anybody provide a cross-sectional drawing showing the innards of a basic 1980's turbo?

There are only 4 places it can leak oil; the oil inlet and drain connections and either end of the shaft.

Clean the area well, run it a few minutes and see exactly where its coming from. If it were a shaft seal leaking that bad your exhaust would be smoking a lot.

The oil seems to be coming from the casing joint, all the way around, and not from the oil hose connections. There is some smoke with the exhaust, to be sure. I am wondering if the turbo casing is not sealed then the oil may be escaping that way. Is this possible?

What kind of turbo do you have?

The oil is coming from the shaft seal, the turbo needs rebuilt.

Oh dear, that is bad news. I have been unable to get to the turbo to remove it... Might have to move directly to plan B (engine/ transmission swop). I will give it another go, and also try to identify the turbo unit. Thanks again.

my car was smoking upon slight/medium acceleration and i knew the turbo needed rebuilding since it has 180k on the odo.

A turbo can't be properly rebuilt by a home DIYer.

Also $120 is VERY expensive for a T3 kit, it shouldn't cost more than $35!

What "tools" do they include? $120 won't cover the cost of a calibrated torque wrench to assemble the shaft and no special tools are needed to remove the turbo leaving the turbine housing in place, just a 10mm socket and 13mm wrench.

Thanks for your replies. I almost have the turbo out. So far I have had to remove: brake master cyl, aircleaner, bullbar, grille, radiator, aircon condenser and compressor, inlet manifold, section of exhaust and front drive shaft!
