Thumbs Up My seat upgrades
Pulled from a MR2 Spyder, welded to MB factory seat mount rails. Very supportive, comfortable, and look much better than the worn out factory units.

They also weigh significantly less. The factory passenger seat weighed 60lbs, driver seat weighed almost 80! The Spyders only weigh 40 at most. I get another half foot of head room now, much nicer than my head bouncing off ceiling on bumpy roads. Big Grin

'78 300D, OM617.912: 4spd manual, TB03 at 10PSI, 26*BTDC, DV's turned, HVAC, emissions system removed, e-fan, short ram, 3" downpipe to straight exhaust, W126 Bendix brakes, MR2 Spyder seats. 2890lbs

RE: My seat upgrades
Did you have lead-lined seats? They are nowhere near that heavy (About half of what you said). Huh
There weren't any MR2s in the yards I checked at for seats but those do look nice. I'm loving my Mitsubishi Galant seats. Big Grin

Not everyone feels the same about having well designed Japanese seats in a Mercedes....

RE: My seat upgrades
I don't have a problem with japanese parts in a german car. I don't know why the stockers were so heavy, the last owner tried to restuff them on top of the blown-out padding. Huh On the other hand, my brother has recaros (came with truck) in his '88 Toyota pickup. The seats collapsed and the fabric's worn through, and if you get in or out wrong, the side bolsters will crush your tailbone. They may have been nice to begin with, but they are horrible now.

Those guys would rather spend 1200 bucks on a seat than a turbo upgrade. I say good work man! My seats are horrible and in a hard corner you end up sliding around. Hmmm.... I'll keep on the look out for some doners!

RE: My seat upgrades
Recaro is nothing fancy these days. You can't fly anywhere without sitting in one. My seats are already replaced once with OEM. I honestly couldnt even tell you what the old ones looked like. Recaro is the way to go IMO. If I wait a bit and beat the BMW guys there, something like this at pull a part is relatively cheap :

RE: My seat upgrades
Hi guys, just joined. My 1978 240D seats are torture chambers, especially the lower back area. I'm willing to put in anything that's better, preferably something that needs little mods. My seat tracks and adjustment handles are toast anyway. So, in discussion and pics people have stated examples, but not specific make/model/year(s). Any suggestions that would stave off disk replacement?

RE: My seat upgrades
For an easy seat-upgrade from the W123-seats, I would try W124 facelift seats first, not the best, but much better than the originals, you may be lucky enough to find the same color/material also.

RE: My seat upgrades
I had a couple of MKI MR2's and those seats are LIGHT. Recaros from a MKII GLI were easily twice as heavy, and I'd hate to use them for a daily driver, methinks. (I'm 6'2" tall and wide at the shoulders, mind you.) They're also made out of that weird indestructible kind of fabric also associated with cloth Volvo 240 interiors. The MR2 seat is a very Japanese kind of semi-ideal compromise between day to day usefulness and performance (in this case, lateral support).

However I will say that the stock MB seats (if in good condition) are probably superior for long distance highway cruising, and for cranking the seat back and catching a roadside snooze...superb.

FYI Civics, Sentras, and many other Japanese cars have similar seats, and word to the wise: when Mazda does something right, it tends to do it VERY right. I doubt very much any MB head would complain about a MKIII RX7's front seats in a 123.

late 80's GTI/GLI, the heated leather ones are even heavier than the versions I had (bluish gray cloth), but are quite a set of thrones. Those look more manageable than the ones I had, they were just really deep (and tight - I'm a big guy).

They are from a 190E 2.3-16, but there was a leather option on the W124's thats are slightly less sporty and then the W201 special edition seats for supreme comfiness.

Trust me their recaro's Big Grin I dunno, I was tempted by the checker "sport" seats. I could do s2000 seats but I draw the line there.

Leather sucks in the 120* california desert. The MR2 mesh on cloth is super breathable which is my chief reason for going with these.

Dude, I live in phoenix.. Dont try and tell me about the heat I roll no A/C on stock seats. Ha! I'm sure that you don't step out of your car and have the see-through white shirt but man riding the cushy seat I'll take that everytime.
