Conversion and Injector question
Hello everyone I am a new member to your forum and from what I have seen in the other posts it looks like you are all pretty well educated in the workings of MB engines, so here goes
Question#1 I don't actually own a diesel yet but I am considering installing an OM617 into my 72' Datsun 240z is there a specific year or casting# I should look for? I also want to use manual (it has a 4 speed right now) hopefully with modifications it can surpass the stock performance and MPG (151HP/149TQ & 18/23) What do you guys think?
Question#2 I also own a 85' 300zx turbo (air intake, 3 inch exhaust, 10 psi 209rwhp@5600rpm/241lb-ft@3200rpm) my question is my car uses Bosch style injectors 240cc and I am looking to upgrade and have heard that the Mercedes 420sel uses the same type injectors but with double the flow rate does anyone know what year they started using EFI instead of mechanical injection?, thanks
With those injectors and reworked regulator with a NPR intercooler I plan on running around 15psi hopefully around 300 lb-ft at the rear wheels Sounds good to me what do you guys think?

Re: Conversion and Injector question
Thanks for the info, the Z engine bay is quite spacious due to the quite large dimension I-6 that came in the car, yes there is a nissan diesel called the LD28 it is a 2.8 liter naturally aspirated 6 cylinder engine making about 80 hp unfortunately they are quite rare as far as I know, there are many viable OM engines around can someone tell me more about the OM60x engines what years do they come in would a cummins pump work with a 6 cylinder MB engine for more fueling just an idea,
thanks

Re: Conversion and Injector question
OH and about how much do these engines weigh? because the stock 6 cylinder L-series in the early datsuns weigh about 450lb

Closer to 650 when wet.

82-85 300D/TD/CD/SD models with the 617.95x number (on the block near the #4 glowplug).
A well tuned 617 with enough fuel should be able to easily beat your 300ZX's 209rwhp@5600rpm/241lb-ft@3200rpm. It should have more like 200hp@4500 and over 300lb/ft at 2500/3000rpm.

Re: Conversion and Injector question
it looks like fuel is obviously the deciding factor, what kind of power with the stock pump? Myna diesel pump? how do these differ has anyone used a pump from a different vehicle (12 valve cummins for example) also what kind of boost on a 617 with proper fuel supply and a big FMIC

Re: Conversion and Injector question
Thanks for the info guys, I think I might pursue trying to find a LD28 datsun engine even though they are rare here. Ultimately MPG is key factor and the ld28 mates to a very common 5-speed matched with the right rear end and the lightweight body I would like to get 40mpg sound possible? I think an additional overdrive unit would kill my wallet. although I love that OM617 I recently drove my friends 300cd albeit I don't the the 722 trans does not do the engine justice.

Even a power tuned Diesel can return great MPG if you keep your foot out of it.

Re: Conversion and Injector question
Just to be clear I have not eliminated the idea of using an MB engine this will be for the 240z which is originally equipped with a 2.4 liter OHC inline 6 iron block w/aluminum heads double valve springs and longitudally mounted RWD the engine in my opinion looks a lot like the om617 because of the valve cover, My 300zx is going to keep its engine longitudally mounted 3.0liter v6 (japans first v6) equipped with the stock garret t3 now running 10 psi.
as far as the LD28 I'm going to check some more of the local nissan recyclers and will post pics as soon as I make some progress towards that, it will be interesting to see how your knowledge of the MB diesels can apply to modifying the LD28
