I jsut had a quick question to you knowledeful diesel guys out there.

i had my 1980 300sd for close to a year now and the car is great. The engine compressions is good and blah blah blah.

the only thing lately though is that on startup the car shoots white smoke and sounds like its gurgles for only one or two second then its runns perfect.

Also the car shoots whiteish/blackish smoke only under hard accleration and everytime the turbo kicks in/spools up.

is that a sign that the turbo is going Bad?? every thing is original and the car has 178,000 miles on the odomoter.

Any coolant loss?

Glowtime could be the cause, or one or two of the glow plugs are gone.
My engine used to shake for a second or two with some exhaust built up. I replaced all glow plugs and changed the relay for a newer one (om 603). Didn't connect the temp connector. Everytime I crank the engine it gets the full glow (90 seconds)circle. You can tell by the sound of the engine when the glowtime ends. Smooth start ups any day. Even up in the mountains in the wintertime, But don't wait for the light to go out.

check your glow plugs! If ones out it will smoke white fuel smelling smoke till that cylinder get hot enough to fire

Also injectors, timing.

i ordered the new rebuilt kit from mercedessource.com it inlcudes everything plus tools to make it simple.

the car only smokes every time the turbo kicks in so that has to be the reason especially 30 years old with 180k.
