617.952 Wont start
I am just trying to get my project running again tonight and I cannot get the !@#!$ engine to start! I have done a valve adjust and I have had the IP pump off. I timed the IP pump twice (drip method in fsm) and came up with the same result both times. glow plugs are working great as well... all i get is black smoke and the smell of diesel while cranking.... I am out of ideas. please help!

You sure the IP is installed on the compression stroke instead of exhaust?

I did just check to make sure i wasn't 180 out forced and it was spot on (cam lobes pointing up in a "V" shape on cyl #1). The first time I installed the ip I did make this mistake however. Tried a small shot of ether and it fires right up and runs. I then checked my glow plug relay and in the process of priming injectors the screw that holds the fuseable link in had vibrated out so glow plugs were dead by the time I was primed. Just waiting for the engine to cool down to see if it works now.

All Filters are brand new and using a portable plastic tank at the moment.

Pull your starter motor apart, clean up the comm and the brushes. If it doesn't start, blow it up. The starter motor was my problem. Another thing, the negative battery terminal cable that mounts directly to the body, pull it off, and clean the body and the eyelet. We found that it was losing power at that junction.
